There are so many wonderful moments we share with brides and their families here in the store. But there are not too many that actually touch me as the one I’m about to share. Now, certainly no bride cries alone in here! The moment a bride finds her dress, all of us get a little teary eyed.
But this bride…well, it puts into perspective what we actually do here at The Bridal Cottage. That a wedding dress represents so much more than a piece of fabric, much more than its sparkle and lace. It truly represents family, love and life.
This morning we received a call from a bride requesting an appointment for the next day. I’m normally not on the floor to answer the phone, but this morning I did--because I was meant to take this particular phone call.
The bride started off the conversation by apologizing for asking for a bridal appointment for the next day. She said it was very important to her to have an appointment at The Bridal Cottage for several reasons. One, her cousin had purchased her gown from us a year or so back and had such an amazing experience, and she wants that experience too!
And two, since she is from Houston, she wants to try on wedding dresses with her mother, which lives here in Little Rock. She informed me her mom has breast cancer. And that yesterday they received some “not-so-good” news…that the cancer was spreading at a rapid pace. The time that she shares with her mom is very precious and she couldn’t imagine trying on wedding dresses without her. So she dropped everything and is flying to Little Rock in the morning. She thanked me for working her and her family in for an appointment on such a busy Saturday.
After I took the appointment, I broke down and just cried. Not only am I sad for her and her family, but that she wants to share such an important moment with her mother, here at The Bridal Cottage. Sometimes we forget that we are not just in the wedding dress business, but it’s about family. This is such a special time in a bride’s life…a blending of two families…a life filled with love and happiness. And knowing that she may not have many more happy times ahead with her mom--that this bridal appointment is going to be one of those happy moments that she will remember forever.
So, thank you, sweet bride, for coming here with your family to shop for your wedding dress. We look forward to sharing this moment with you and your mom. And, we thank YOU for reminding us of the true meaning of what we do.
